open prints vs. limited edition prints [click to open/close]

Open prints are NOT signed and are smaller than the limited editions.

Open prints are reproduced on archival paper (acid free) but it is NOT the small weight or quality as the limited edition paper.

Open prints can be reproduced by the thousands vs. finite limited edition run.

Giclee printing (pronounced zhee-clay) is a method of printing to create high quality prints. Originating from the French term, “la giclée,” it means, “that which is sprayed.”

For a work to be truly giclee, three basic requirements must be met.

      • It must be created at a resolution of no less than 300 dots per inch (DPI). This will ensure that the final print has the sharpest detail and lacks any of the fragmentation that can occur with images of lower resolution.
      • Paper is crucial. The giclee print must be on paper or substrate that is acid free and consist of a 100% cotton archival quality rag base.
      • Giclee prints are pigment-based, not dye-based as found in lower-cost prints. Pigment-based inks have a longer lifespan and can last several hundred years without significant fading, if properly framed and hung out of direct sunlight (as with any fine art).

All of Melanie’s prints are produced by The Color Group, a fine art printing company located in Seattle’s Sodo district.
